Our time and work in the Villa Capri neighborhood of Río Piedras was a humbling experience in understanding the current state of drug usage, addiction, detoxification, and rehabilitation for women substance abusers in Puerto Rico. Iniciativa Comunitaria opened the Compromiso de Vida 1 to serve homeless women that are or are at risk of becoming HIV positive. This building which we assisted in repairing is the first detox center on the island to cater to the needs of women and the LGBTQ community. Unfortunately, the men's detox center, Compromiso de Vida 2, originally located in the town of Juncos was destroyed by Hurricane María. Currently, this center will have to service both men and women in this limited space. The integrity of the building's infrastructure was weakened exponentially due to Hurricanes Irma and María. We spent the day scraping and painting to preserve the buildings exterior and prolong its ability to weather the storms as well as the oncoming hurricane season which will arrive in June. By painting the exterior, the staff was able to focus on doing the needed paperwork to accelerate the permits necessary to reopen the center as soon as possible.
