Towards our last day in the brigade, the team worked together to assist in the newest mission of Para La Naturaleza which aims to plant a million trees across the island over the next six years. This became their missions because the biodiversity that naturally exists in Puerto Rico was destroyed by the hurricanes, starting with hurricane Irma. It also takes the the brunt of climate change and is directly affected, hence it must be replenished. Estimates show that the island lost nearly 30 million trees due to the hurricanes Irma and Maria. The brigade focused on clearing the debris from a plot of land to be able to make room for new trees that are native to Puerto Rico to be planted. Additionally, we received a educational tour of the facilities and the tree nursery and learned about the importance of environmental justice.
