The mangroves in Guánica and Lajas are an important stimulant to the local economy. Both towns suffer from high levels of poverty, unemployment, and underemployment. Ecotourism and the local fishermen stimulate the towns' economies. Preservation and sustainable development projects have become even more essential as the towns continue to loose their population. Our group spent the day cleaning the mangroves and understanding its ecological importance. The mangroves, besides being an important ecosystem, prevent the erosion of the land, and prevent the adverse effects that would negatively impact the area from its people to its marine life. The work that was done was also a great opportunity for team building amongst the brigade members which led to an appreciation nature, amongst other things.
