On our first day, the second half of the brigade led by faculty traveled to Manatí, Puerto Rico with the medical staff from Clínica Bantiox, a facility that provides free medical services to people throughout Puerto Rico, Vieques, and Culebra. The Iniciativa Comunitaria Health Brigade in Manatí focused on aiding the vulnerable populations of the community who would ultimately be unable to access any health services otherwise which included the homeless, elderly, and substance abusers. The organization's purpose for creating these health brigades was to reach out to the people that were unable to travel to medical clinics or receive care at local hospitals of CDTs for a variety of reasons. Our team was able to quickly adapt and play an essential role within the brigade. Sabino Andres Vargas, a member of our brigade and an alumni of John Jay College, gained first hand experienced providing medical services by assisting the doctors and nurses with patients. William Santana, another alumni of John Jay College was able to increase the amount of patients the organization reached out to by going into the community and promoting the free health services and donations provided by the brigade and other local organizations. Magdalena Oropeza and Santos Garcia, current students, registered patients that were to be treated and assisted in gathering information on their immediate medical needs. Dr. Jodie Roure, Gabriela Ramirez Vargas, Assistant Director of JJC RHB & UHLC, and student Nathaly Ramirez conducted patient intakes both in the local tented area and throughout the community by assessing the overall needs of the patients, including their home situations, their mental health pre and post Hurricane Maria, and the assistance they received after the damage caused by the hurricanes. At many points the duties varied and all brigade participants were able to rotate these tasks.
